What is GRILLED?

GRILLED is an investigative journalism project focused on food systems and the meat industry. It was launched in 2026 by Zach Boren, who spent more than a decade digging into big polluters for Unearthed, Greenpeace's independent investigations unit. His work played a pivotal role in the UK's fracking ban and led to new regulations for toxic sludge; his research into the livestock lobby ran on the front page of the New York Times.
GRILLED produces sharp, timely and revelatory reporting. It delivers a regular email to subscribers, including scoops, analysis and original stories. It often partners with mainstream outlets to reach the widest possible audience.
GRILLED is a nonprofit journalism outfit funded by philanthropic foundations and its readers. Funders have no influence on editorial decisions or specific stories.
